The use of returnable container systems in logistics is an important step towards sustainable production. VW Group Logistics works successfully according to this principle. In order to reduce return traffic, the headquarters in Wolfsburg rely upon mathematically optimized transport planning for its entire European network. Together with the optimization experts at OPTANO, this has been taken to a new level in a pilot project.

The enhanced method can be distinguished in particular by a high level of detail thus making it even easier to optimize transport between all plants and suppliers. A sophisticated algorithm ensures that each transport is maximally efficient for each type of container and generates as little traffic as possible. User-friendliness and the stability of the system were also improved. The project is now ready to enter the next phase after a successful proof of concept.

Dr. Hollmann - OPTANO

Dr. Dominik Hollmann, Head of the Project at OPTANO:

“A great project that was particularly characterized by the intensive collaboration with the client’s very committed project team. Not only did we create real added value together but we also had a lot of fun working as a team”.
